What's for Dinner? (6.10.10)

Sometimes there's just opportunity sitting there for the taking. A simple dinner of boneless pork chops - pan fried with a little sage, salt and pepper; green beans - steamed and dressed with a little butter, salt and pepper; jasmine rice. Not much of a note, right? But you see, the chops were a little thicker than usual, and so took longer to cook than we were planning. What to do with that found seven minutes? How about dicing an apple into small cubes, and throwing that into a pan with some butter to soften. Add a little cinnamon, dried chipotle, sage and salt, and let it all soften and stew together. Finish with a splash of good balsamic vinegar. Stir that into the rice, reserving two tablespoons to top the chops. Garnish with a couple extra sage leaves and few more drops of balsamic. Yum, and no extra time spent - but extra taste buds entertained.

Wine with dinner: 2007 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Cuvée Domaine - Says Chinon and Cab Franc loud and clear - nice red fruit (particularly cherry), earth, funk, and a well integrated herbal note. Great acidity makes this a slam-dunk food wine, and it just keeps getting better after a few hours in the decanter.

Bonus Emily picture - zonked out after a very stimulating kindermusic class:

  1. Your impromptu apple chutney (?) sounds tasty. We'll have to try that sometime.

Out of curiosity, what's a Kindermusic class like, and are the other participants any older than Emily?

  2. So far Emily and I have only dropped in on one class. I have signed us up for a 5 class 'unit' starting Friday called "Busy Days". In the class we tried, she was by far the youngest, and the entire 45 minutes is a little too stimulating for her. Included is the class is a take home CD, which is one reason I signed up; I think we'll get as much out of it at home as in the class. There are songs to welcome each kid, songs with bubbles, songs that involve movement (like touching your right hand to your left foot) and songs to say bye bye to toys. It's all very cute. I'll keep you posted on what it's really like once we get going. :)
